Collection: Nancy Steele

Nancy’s use of colours and shapes defines layers of placements of objects & people in space and is a result of direct plein air observational studies. The push and pull of forms blocking lights and darks create fascinating patterns of movement that weave the stories that talk about moments in her lifetime. Her works are part landscape, still life, figurative and portrait and fall somewhere between abstraction and realism.

Over several years I have had the privilege of participating in the Square Foot Show. This year, I produced a large piece “Apple Picking” for the BIG show in May. In 2024 “Suzanne” won best in show at the Kingston School of Art.

I continue to explore and develop skills by teaching and taking classes with Daniel Hughes at Queen’s and the instructors at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto. I enjoy volunteer work as curator for the Wolfe Island Gallery artist collective.

Formal education started with 4 years at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, followed by teacher qualifications & an undergraduate degree in drama at Queen’s. A lifetime of teaching spanned across Artist in School programs, St. Lawrence College, Kingston School of Art and with Corrections Canada.

Works in sculptural jewellery and boxes exhibited at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Station Gallery and Visual Arts Centre in the Durham Region to name a few and at the One of a Kind Show in Toronto. I am grateful for many patrons who have supported my career by purchasing selected pieces to add to their collection and enjoyment.
